Finding a honeymoon destination in India leaves you with many choices. A dash of thrill, some quiet moments, lots of scenery and of course, romance are the ingredients for a precious, once-in-a-lifetime getaway.

Kerala sets a beautiful stage of tropical wonder and sublime mountain attractions, where backwaters meander into the sea and adventure awaits at every turn. Here are a list of activities, perfect for two.

The imagery associated with a houseboat cruise is enough to make you and your loved one opt for the experience. A luxurious boat, verdant scenery and gentle waters provide the backdrop of what will be a cherished honeymoon experience. Enjoy a romantic cruise on the backwaters of Kerala and enjoy the sights and sounds of the unique riverine landscape. 52 kms south of Cochin, Allepey is an ideal base for your houseboat voyage.

When to go: Backwater coasting can be done throughout the year, but the weather is mildest in the winter months.

Tip: Try to have karimeen polichadhu, a local fish recipe that can be cooked on your boat itself.

  • Varkala Beach is famous for its seaside cliffs.
  • Kovalam Beach is best in the evenings, where you can hold hands and catch the sunset together
  • Kappad Beach has historical significance thanks to it being Vasco Da Gama’s first landing point in India.

When to go: November to February features moderate temperatures, perfect for seaside activities.

Tip: Take a dip in some of the warm waters of the Arabian Sea and enjoy some seaside snacks indigenous to Kerala including Kappa and Pakodas.

Where: Kochi, Wayanad.

The allure of Kerala lies not just in its laid-back beauty, but also the adrenaline raising indulgences that can be had in its immaculate topography. Spice up your honeymoon with some water sports, where you and your loved one can share some adventurous moments. The best water sports venue in Kerala would include kayaking on the backwaters, an ideal activity for two, as you explore the surroundings together. A regular kayaking session starts at INR 1000 and it is a day time activity. A scuba diving session can also be enjoyed in Cochin starting at around INR 4000.

When to go: December to February offers good weather for kayaking in calm waters.

Tip: Try heading into the backwaters and catching fish with the locals who use their own techniques without nets!

Ayurvedic Spa

Where: Kottakal Arya Vaidya Shala, Kumarakom.

Kerala is also famous for its Ayurvedic spas, where many come to rejuvenate, both physically and mentally. Enjoy packages specially designed for couples, where you can undergo some relaxing body therapies right next to each other in a tranquil environment. Helmed by veterans in this ancient form of healing, the two of you can experience bliss as those aches get soothed and your muscles relax. The serene environs of Allepey are host to many spa providers and you can get these treatments in other popular locations of Kerala too.

When to go: Any time of the year is good to get a massage.

Tip: Kerala’s Ayurvedic Spa is world famous, so try to experience different types of massages before you go.

Jungle Safaris

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Where: Munnar, Wayanad.

Step into the wilderness of Kerala and add a jungle safari to your honeymoon list. Kerala boasts some of the most varied landscapes in the country, home to a myriad species. Infuse some gambolling wild elephants and skittish antelope to your honeymoon picture album.
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the best places for treks, boating and photography. A day safari would cost around INR 5000 for a couple plus some extra charges. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a haven for many bird species and the spellbinding scenery will just add more to your romantic experience.

When to go: May to November is the ideal time to visit and the park is open from 6.30 AM to 6.30 PM.

Tip: Bring binoculars to spot wild animals that are elusive, including tigers and elephants

Kerala’s Waterfalls

Meenmutty Falls

Where: Athirapally, Meenmutty etc.

Jump into tropical pools and feel the spray of the Western Ghats in your face at one of Kerala’s many gushing waterfalls. What better way to spend a day of romance than an excursion into the bountiful countryside. Wayanad is one of the regions famous for gorgeous waterfalls; some of them are:

  • Meenmutty Falls,
  • Sentinel Rock,
  • Trusharagiri
  • Ariparra. Palaruvi
  • Power House Falls

When to go: June to October is the ideal time to visit the waterfalls.

Tip: Try not to get too close to some of the waterfalls as they come down with incredible velocity and will surely knock you out!

When to go: Anytime of the year is perfect to stay in a villa.

Tip: Try to live in a traditional Tharavadu house to really get a feel of Kerala at its best.

Intimate walks in misty slopes and chilly evenings are just some of the highlights of time spent in these soaring heights. Live the plantation life for a day or two. Wake up to the sounds of chirping birds and enjoy treks around the lush neighbourhoods of Kerala’s mountain country.

When to go: Munnar is an all year destination and is in full glory during the monsoon months of June to September.

Tip: Ask for the Sulimani chai, a popular tea drink that was popularised by the Arabs centuries ago.
